9.00 Introduction and Opening Comments
Dr. Valerie L. Shulman Objectives of the Conference
The 17th ETRA Conference is about innovation in tyre recycling – which is equally dependent upon the practicalities of managing and sourcing tyres – as it is on the imagination and creativity necessary to developing new technologies, products and markets. Both aspects will be presented and discussed.
9.30 Keynote Address
Dr. Jakub Wejchert, Head of Sector for Sustainable Production and Consumption
10.00 Questions and panel discussion
10.30 Coffee break
11.00 Session 1 : Regional models of post-consumer tyre management
The original ‘producer responsibility model’ for post-consumer tyre management was introduced in three Nordic Countries in 1994–1995. During the next 15 years, the model has been adapted and applied in different ways in the EU States – with varying success. Examples of three primary adaptations will be presented and compared. The Panel will be comprised of representatives from : Greece, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Italy.
Lars Aman, Hans Van Mameren The Nordic model
Delegate questions and discussion
13.00 Lunch
14.30 Session 2 : Eco-innovation
Two projects, one in Italy, one Portugal, have focused on the functional and innovative uses of post-consumer tyre materials. In Italy, young designers were challenged to develop ‘urban furniture’ that could benefit from the properties of recycled tyre granulate. In Portugal, Minho University and Biosafe, created an innovative product that incorporates recycling waste into a widely used construction product with noise dampening qualities.
Dotts. Emanuela Scimia The ISIA eco-design programme
Dott. Ettore Musacchi Urban furniture : Granulate innovations
Dr. Graça Vasconcelos An Innovative Solution for Structural Masonry
Ir. Jose Carvahlo Tyre textiles – innovations for sustainable use
ISIA student participants Adapting granulate for innovative uses
Delegate questions and discussion
15.45 Coffee break
16.15 Session 3 : Scenarios for the future
Scenarios can facilitate awareness of future situations or events by identifing the driving forces at play – e.g. social or political dynamics, technological or environmental realities – suggesting different responses or opportunities – providing a ‘glimpse of the future’. Delegates are invited to participate in creating the scenarios.
Michael Christensen A look to the future
18.00 Cocktail reception
FRIDAY 19 March 2010
9.00 Welcome and opening comments
The focus is on the progress being made in developing innovative, sustainable and commercialisable new technologies, materials and products. Each session includes at least one EU-ETRA supported project that was introduced at an ETRA Conference – and is now ‘market ready’.
9.15 Keynote Address
Dr. Theodoros Staikos, Project Manager EACI
9.45 Questions and panel discussion
10.15 Session 4 From project to market
Often called ‘dreamers’, developers of new technologies, materials, products and applications have changed the way we think about ‘waste’ – and how it can be treated and used as a valuable resource. Three ‘dreamers’ will present their ‘visions’ and discuss the commercialisation of their outputs with a counterpart from a commercial sector that uses the material. Together, they will illustrate how a project can evolve towards reality.
Ir. Jacques Vervaet, BTRC Water-jetting : From research to market
Ir. Rody Rijinders, CA compounds Material outputs : Surpassing the targets
Ir. Piotr Sokora, Eco-Logic Approaching success
Dr. Wanda Parasiewicz, Stomil rubber Defining the market options
Ake Paulsson, Ecorub Thermoplastic materials
Ir. Edo Kovacevic, Automotive Commercial products and applications
Panel discussion and questions : The Panel will include MEP Marek Siwiec (Poland), Dr. Theodoros Staikos, the presenters, and Dr. Valerie Shulman.
11.30 Coffee Break
12.00 Session 5 Roads of the future
Recycled tyre materials, which includes the steel as well as the rubber – figure importantly in roads for the future – serving many different functions. The PERSUADE project will be discussed within the context of the adaptability of existing markets. The EcoLanes project will be highlighted, introducing the work being done to develop new materials and procedures.
Ir. Costis Keridis, CKAB Purpose built roads : Creating the market
Dr. Kyriacos Neocleous, SUEL Steel Tyre-Fibres in road structures

14.30 Session 6 Pyrolysis Forum
Ir. Jean-Paul Bouysset has organised and chaired the Pyrolysis Forum for 15 years. Colleague Dr. Gisele Jung joined him almost 10 years ago. Together, they have observed numerous attempts to make pyrolysis a principal means of treating post-consumer tyres. The session will focus on the options and opportunities offered by new pyrolysis technologies and treatments.
